Climb of Life 2018

Climb of Life 2018 back to list

08 November 2018

120 members of the industry took to the hills (without the sound of music) in the Lake District on Friday 2 November to raise money for the Institute of Cancer Research (ICR). This year was the £1 million challenge of the Climb of Life, this meant that collectively over £100K was needed to be raised, to ensure that over that last 12 years £1 million in total would have been raised for the ICR.

A joint BOSS, Nemo, ConsultanC, Office Supplies Now team of Sammy and Rob Bartley, Scott Woodward, Cassie Marvin, John Fitton, Heather and Phil Lawson were joined by a couple of very fit hikers from 3M who all walked up to the Langdale Pikes under the excellent leadership of Mike Baines.

All 11 groups, including BOSS's team, reached their intended destinations, with no one lost, no one seriously injured, and everyone returning safely to the base of the Swan Hotel Grasmere, where the final pledges were tallied up. Graeme Chapman MBE and his able committee of Andrew and Susie Stacey, Carol Houston, Frances and Jason Stephens, and his wife Ruth, were able to reveal the great news that the 11 groups had collectively raised £103,325 and the £1million challenge had been realised.

It was wonderful to see the industry come together for such an important cause and Professor Paul Workman, CEO and President of the ICR gave a short talk on the benefits our fund raising provided them and the very chilling thought that 1 in 2 of us will now be impacted by cancer in some way in our lifetimes.

A massive thanks must go to Richard from the ICR for the brilliant coasters and to Kiran at Colop for the wonderful medals all participants ended up with as momentous of the day to help ease their aching limbs.

Congratulations to the OPI team on raising the most as a team in terms of corporate sponsorships, and also to Hamelin who came in at a close second. Also a huge congratulations to Carol Houston of VOW who was the top individual fundraiser.

A great addition to this year's Climb was the first ‘Ride of Life' reported about on earlier in the year, in which our own BOSS Federation CEO Charles Jarrold, Marketing Director Amy Hutchinson, and Management Accountant Jonathan Rice took part in a few months ago. Sean Starkey and Steve Robinson had the idea of starting this as a supplementary event to the Climb, and Sean was there on Friday to proudly present a cheque for £18k to go towards the overall efforts.

In the 31 years of running Climb of Life, Graeme has managed to cajole, coerce and encourage lots of members of the industry to take part in this amazing event, with now over £1.6 million raised for the various charities that it has supported. No time for a rest though Graeme, as it is back to all the great work you do for us as Chairman of the BOSS Business Supplies Charity!

We salute you.
